PROFILE
On finishing his Master of Technology in Environmental Engineering and Management from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2006, Azhoni started his career as a Scientist in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ministry of Consumer Affairs Government of India. As an Assistant Director of the Central Laboratory of the Bureau of Indian Standards, he was instrumental in developing the Quality Manuals and Quality Procedures of the Laboratory which became a model document for many of the BIS recognized laboratories across the country. As a trained and certified auditor of Laboratory Quality Management System as per IS/ISO/IEC 17025, he carried out technical quality audits of many private as well as government laboratories for BIS laboratory recognition scheme and accreditation. He also served as a visiting faculty for BIS National Institute of Training for Standardization, Noida and conducted several training programs from both industry and academia, including international trainees.
In 2012, after serving the Government of India for six years, he joined Cranfield University, United Kingdom for PhD. On returning from the United Kingdom, he was briefly associated with Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati as a Project Scientist and National Institute of Technology Warangal as an Assistant Professor and then moved on to National Institute of Technology Karnataka in May 2018. Just prior to joining the National Institute of Technology Manipur as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Dr. Azhoni also served as a visiting professor at the Asian Institute of Technology Thailand in 2022 for one semester through the deputation by Ministry of Education Government of India.
Dr. Azhoni’s research interests span beyond the traditional boundaries of Civil Engineering in understanding the social, environmental, and economic impacts of global environmental and climatic change. His earlier research includes investigating the barriers to climate change adaptation for water management from inter-institutional networks perspectives. His research has involved government officials, nongovernmental organisations, development agencies, and other key stakeholder institutions in Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Delhi, producing a comprehensive account of the on-the-ground realities of implementing national and international developmental and environmental strategies. Four of his recent papers have been cited by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in their most recent (Sixth) Assessment Report on Climate Change. More recently, his research focuses on climate change adaptation and disaster management in Northeast India.
